Marcelo Odebrecht, President of Odebrecht, Brazil's largest company in the construction sector, was this Tuesday, March 8, sentenced
to a term of 19 years and four
months in prison for corruption,
money laundering and criminal
association.
This is the latest
development of the well-known and controversial Lava Jato
research, a process that investigates
corrupt practices in the Brazilian state oil company Petrobras
is the center of
operations.
According to
the Brazilian
newspaper Estado also Márcio Faria and
Rogério Araújo, former
directors of Odebrecht,
were sentenced for the same crimes and
with the same term of imprisonment.
The federal judge in
charge of this investigation, Sergio
Moro says, in
the actions of Marcelo
Odebrecht, that "the
practice of corruption crime involved the payment of 108,809,565 reais and 35
million dollars to Petrobras
agents, a value very
expressive. "
There were
other executives
related to Odebrecht to be condemned. This
is the case of the former director Alexandrian Alencar,
sentenced to 15 years and seven months in prison for corruption and money laundering, and Cesar Ramos Rocha,
sentenced to nine years and nearly 11 months imprisonment
for corruption and criminal association.
However the Folha de
S.Paulo said that Marcelo Odebrecht has already given
permission for the construction company
executives so that they can negotiate whistleblower agreements awarded to
Justice, being the one to evaluate the possibility of taking a similar decision.
The award-winning tipoff is under
Brazilian law and is a kind of legal benefit granted to a particular defendant to accept help and support the judicial investigation.
Also during Operation Lava
Jato, Lula da Silva,
former president of Brazil, had his home ransacked
and was heard by the investigation on suspicion of having benefited from Petrobras payments scheme.
