Indonesian President approved
Wednesday new penalties for those convicted of sexual abuse of children,
including chemical castration and a maximum penalty of death.
The convicted pedophiles may also be required to wear electronic monitoring
devices after release from prison, according to the new rules introduced by an
emergency decree."These standards are intended to overcome the crisis caused by sexual violence against children", said today the President Joko Widodo, the presidential palace in Jakarta.
"Sexual crimes against children are extraordinary crimes, because they threaten the lives of children," he added.
The presidential decree puts into effect immediately the new sanctions, though parliament may later CHUMBA it.
Widodo was taken to act
following the murder after gang rape in April, a 14 year old girl, attacked by
a bunch of drunken guys when I went home from school on the western island of
Sumatra.
His body was found three days later in a wood, bound and naked. Seven teens with 16 and 17 were arrested earlier this month for the crime.

The attack sparked a national
debate on sexual violence, calls for the introduction of tougher penalties for
sex offenders and protests in the capital.
The case was compared with the fatal gang rape of an Indian student on a bus in New Delhi in 2012, which led mass protests and led to a tightening of laws applicable to violations in India.
Indonesia will be criticized for extending the use of the death penalty, so far applied to drug traffickers, and that sparked international outrage when, last year, killed seven foreigners convicted of drug trafficking placing them before a squad firing .
Under the previous laws, the maximum penalty for rape - including minors - was 14 years in prison.
By introducing chemical castration, Indonesia joins a small group of countries in the world that uses such a punishment, which includes Poland and some federal states of the United States. In 2011, South Korea became the first Asian country to legalize the practice.

Widodo did not provide
further details on the identification of suspects through control and
monitoring devices.
Local media had earlier reported that could be deployed an 'microchip' legs of sex offenders to be released into the wild.
