Arrogance, Communication & Pandémie.

How do the relevant services prepare for pandemics? What do they talk about in their meetings? Here is in a video of 23 mn an instructive overview of what is said in these felted circles. In this conference of the European Scientific Working group on Influenza and the Royal Institute of International Affairs, held in London on January 22, 2019, the virologist and Belgian influenza commissioner Marc Van Ranst explains to the audience how to go about "preparing for an influenza pandemic". He is involved in the "Communication and Public Engagement" module.

Extracts: He first recommends to his listeners "to be omnipresent" from the first day of declaration of the state of pandemic "to attract the attention of the media". It is about letting them know that you are absolutely available to inform them and to "make agreements with them", all this "to obtain complete coverage of the ground". In this way "they will not go looking for alternative voices". If you do that, "it makes things a lot easier," Ranst adds. Then "you get the message" our country is ready for a pandemic "". This is a "gross overestimate" he says - which makes the audience laugh - but "it's crucial, uh ... to get into this pandemic" He then quotes his own practice: "We asked all presenters on all TV channels: would you like to volunteer in some kind of infomercial?" (..) and "they said yes. And it was extremely influential".

Having tried ten years ago (so during the H1N1 pseudo-pandemic) to use Facebook and Twitter, Ranst claims that "there were not enough people" on these social networks at the time. “If we did it now, that would be a great channel to communicate. However, uh, it works both ways. I mean Fake News would also be transmitted a lot more easily via Facebook and Twitter than it was ten years ago. " he continues: "This vaccination campaign raised a lot of questions. In fact, the crux of the campaign was the vaccination campaign (..) so you had to show them the stocks (..) that we we have the vaccines, that they are in the country (..) because if the population really believes that this vaccine is so desirable, that even football players would be ready to become dishonest in order to be vaccinated ", ... he is possible to "play on it". He then shows press titles with his photo at the top of an article intended to make the vaccine desirable, very proud to have made the buzz at the time.
