MYSTERIOUS CHALK FIGURE WITH LARGE PENIS MAYBE 1,000 YEARS OLD
If you’ve been to the hillsides of Dorset, England, you may have seen the famed Cerne Abbas Giant.
He’s not hard to miss, the 180-foot-tall chalk figure sports a rather large and erect penis.
It’s long been debated by archaeologists long how the Cerne Abbas Giant has been on the land, but researchers suggest the figure might be many centuries old, according to The Guardian. Researchers utilized high-tech analysis of sand samples collected from the Cerne Giant’s site to place the figures creation between 700 and 1100 A.D.
The National Trust — the organization behind the protection of the Cerne Giant — stated the figure was likely created in the late Saxon period around the 10th century.
Geoarchaelogist Mike Allen stated many “archaeologists and historians thought he was prehistoric or post-medieval, but not medieval.”
To study the sand at the Cerne Giant, researchers dug down to the base of trenches and took samples, according to New Scientist. Luminescence testing that was optically stimulated showed the sand was last exposed to sunlight about 1,000 years ago.
While the Cerne Giant’s size makes him very noticeable from afar, his most distinguishable feature is his erect penis, which measures 26 feet in length. It’s believed it’s intended to promote fertility, according to the BBC.
While its age has been discovered, the giant’s creator still remains a mystery.
