ROBERT MENARD-MAYOR OF BEZIERS-JUDGED IN PARIS

The mayor of Béziers was tried Wednesday in Paris for provocation to racial hatred.

"After spending my life fighting racism, I saw it as infamous that I could be accused of that." In front of the judges of the 17th Correctional Chamber of Paris, the mayor of Béziers, Robert Ménard, dressed in black, sweeps away accusations, suspicions of racism. And even insinuates himself at the bar of such insinuations, which led him Wednesday in this courtroom.

Pursued for provocation to hate, after two tweets including that of September 1, 2016 ("#rentreedesclasses: the most striking proof of #Grand Replacement in progress. Just look at old photos of class ...» Editor's note) and the disputed remarks made on a morning of news, the first aedile of the city of Herault refuted these accusations. And pleads the incomprehension, even the bad faith of his "inquisitors".

"How can we talk about something that you do not know? The Biterrois cannot find themselves under the traits of their mayor," said the elected official, more annoyed than pained by the harshness of the pleadings of the lawyers of the six anti-racist associations, civil parties.

However, the latter did not have words hard enough to denounce the "cowardice" of a mayor who "does not assume" and who "feeds the fear and the rejection of the other".
"Great replacement"

"I know the weight of the words, the weight of the formulas," explains the former journalist, who justifies his presence in court by a misinterpretation of his writings and statements. "My job is to say things brutally because things are brutal, in order to change them," says Robert Ménard, face closed.

Pushed into its entrenchments by the president, Fabienne Siredey-Garnier, he openly questioned the nature of his interrogation. "Your questions are cumbersome," pointed out the aedile. "No, they are taken from your answers, I ask only to understand," the magistrate calmly continued, determined to impose his tempo, "and no, I do not try to make you say anything, but when you say you want to deghetto Schools, neighborhoods, why use the extremely negative term of "big replacement"? "
The outcry that had provoked these remarks

"It's your interpretation," he adds, "for me, this term is not, like the threshold of tolerance used by François Mitterrand," adds Robert Ménard, who subdues a process of intent, forgetting the outcry provoked his remarks on the too many Muslim children in the schools of the city.

What does it matter then if the term "great replacement" is theorized by the extreme right-wing writer Renaud Camus, for whom there was a process of substitution on French territory. For Robert Ménard who risks a year of prison and 45,000 euros of fines in this file, does not share this theory complotist. Even if he admits to know the writer. To the point of having ordered him a book on Beziers. Wednesday at the hearing, the prosecutor requested a fine of € 1,800. The judgment was put under advisement. The decision is expected on 25 April.

Saisi!
