Sir Richard was speaking in Munich to a crowd of 5,000
people about the benefits of migration.
Wearing full lederhosen, he said: “Germany should be
proud of its refugee aid.
“The pictures of Germans who welcomed the immigrants
have made me cry, and I think they have made many people all over the world
cry.”
He said the “wonderful contrast” between the current
situation and the “horror pictures” of death trains in Germany showed the
country had made huge progress.
He said: “That was something very special, you have
set a great example to the rest of the world.
“In five years, Germany will see the great benefits of
its actions.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has come under huge
pressure for her controversial migrant policy, which has seen more than one
million migrants arrive in the country since last year. Another 300,000 people
are expected to arrive this year.
Her popularity has plummeted since she declared “we
can do it” last year. Just 42 per cent of Germans are now in favour of her
running for a fourth term as Chancellor at next year’s elections. According to
the same poll, 50 per cent of people oppose her running again.
The outlook is not good for Mrs Merkel or her party.
In March, the right-wing, anti-migrant Alternative for
Germany (AfD) experienced a boost when they won 24 per cent of a regional vote
despite only polling at 19 per cent, and leader Leif-Erik Holm expects the
current social climate in Germany to lead to more successes.
Mr Holm said: “The refugee crisis has helped us,
there’s little question about that. We can’t take this unbearable dictator of a
chancellor anymore.
“I would like to live in a democratic state based on
the rule of law. This is why I say ‘No’ to a multicultural society.”
At a recent AfD rally, the crowd cheered Mr Holm and
chanted “Merkel has to go!”
What do you think? Is he right or not?
